Records of the Freedmen's Aid Society, which was founded in Boston in 1862 as the Educational Commission. Included is one vol. of meeting minutes, 1862-74; four vols. of "Daily Records," 1865-66, 1868-69, and 1871-74; three vols. of Teacher's Committee records, 1864-76; and one vol. listing teachers in southern states, their schools, salaries, supporting societies, and numbers of pupils. Daily records include notes on correspondence with teachers, agents, and others, and copies of letters by the Secretary of the Teacher's Committee, Ednah Dow Littlehale Cheney. Also, correspondence between the committee and individuals actively teaching in the Southern States, describing the educational needs and the day-to-day treatment and conditions faced by the freedman in the South. Correspondents include Philena Carkin, Arthur Sumner, Lucretia Crocker, and A.D. Holmes.

Ednah Dow Littlehale Cheney (June 27, 1824 – November 19, 1904) was an American writer, reformer, and philanthropist. She was born on Beacon Hill, Boston, June 27, 1824; and was educated in private schools in Boston. Cheney served as secretary of the School of Design for Women in Boston from 1851 till 1854.
